EQUIP accepts applications from qualified candidates on a continual basis. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be junior or senior standing in an accredited undergraduate program in fire protection engineering with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. How can I pursue a career in Fire Protection Engineering?
The first step to becoming a fire protection engineer is to obtain a degree from an accredited institution. The University of Maryland, Department of Fire Protection Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science degree program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) provides a list of additional Universities which offer programs in fire protection engineering or that offer similar fire safety and engineering technology degree programs.
Engineering Quadrants Undergraduate Internship Program (EQUIP)
EQUIP offers fire protection engineering interns the opportunity to experience a broad range of fire protection engineering roles. The goal of the program is to ensure that every intern gains experience in four areas (quadrants) of the fire protection engineering profession: 1) Fire Safety & Combustion Toxicity Research, 2) Fire Investigation & Litigation Support, 3) Fire Protection System Design & Construction Management, and 4) Code Compliance Inspection & Risk Assessment
